The annual Amarnath Yatra faced an unexpected halt from the Baltal route on Friday. Officials suspended the pilgrimage due to heavy rainfall and to facilitate much-needed repair work on the path leading to the holy shrine.
This year’s yatra began on July 3, attracting around 4.5 lakh devotees to the sacred site that houses the naturally formed ice lingam. However, authorities announced that the pilgrimage is currently on hold from both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes.
On Thursday night, the Baltal area endured significant rainfall, leading to a minor flash flood at one location. Thankfully, officials confirmed that there were no casualties or property damage reported. Nonetheless, the weather conditions prompted the swift suspension of the yatra for the safety of the pilgrims.
Officials emphasized that no pilgrims would be allowed to proceed towards the cave shrine from the Baltal route until the situation improves. They reassured that repair work on the trails is underway to restore safe passage.
This year’s pilgrimage is expected to conclude on August 28, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan. The yatra has long held significance as millions travel from across the country to seek blessings at the revered shrine.
Despite the current disruption, the shrine has seen a steady influx of devotees this season, exemplifying faith and resilience amid challenges. Authorities are closely monitoring weather conditions and will make updates regarding the resumption of the yatra as soon as possible.
