Jaishankar Emphasizes India’s Need to Prioritize Manufacturing for Economic Competition with China

Surat, Mar 2: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar underscored the imperative for India to prioritize manufacturing to compete economically with China, a sector he highlighted as being overlooked by previous administrations before Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office in 2014. Speaking at a corporate summit on “Bharat’s Economic Rising” organized by the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI), Jaishankar emphasized that focusing on manufacturing is pivotal for India’s economic response to China.

Addressing the audience, Jaishankar, a former ambassador to China, highlighted the abnormality in relations between New Delhi and Beijing due to tensions along the border. He stressed the necessity for peace and stability in border areas to improve ties between the two nations.

Jaishankar also reiterated India’s unwavering stance against terrorism, emphasizing that there can be no compromise in combating it. When queried about the future of the World Trade Organization (WTO), especially concerning China’s dubious trade practices, Jaishankar affirmed India’s commitment to the global forum, emphasizing the need to safeguard Indian interests through strategic alliances and bilateral agreements.

Reflecting on India’s economic resilience amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Jaishankar highlighted the government’s reforms and policies that propelled India to become the fastest-growing large economy. He emphasized India’s burgeoning global perception, attributing it to its leadership, stability, and confidence.

Jaishankar highlighted India’s rising prominence on the global stage, citing examples such as the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) free trade agreement with India and collaborations with Western countries on emerging technologies. He emphasized India’s strategic partnerships and the country’s unique position as a sought-after global partner.

In conclusion, Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to protecting the interests of its citizens abroad, citing mobility agreements with various countries to ensure equal treatment for Indian professionals. He emphasized India’s readiness to engage with the world and leverage opportunities while safeguarding its interests.
