In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, police in Jammu and Kashmir apprehended three suspected drug peddlers, including a 17-year-old boy, for possession of heroin on Monday. The arrests took place late Sunday evening in the Samba and Kathua districts, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes.
The teenager was intercepted while riding a motorcycle and heading towards JDA Colony from Balole Khad in the Bari Brahmana area of Samba. During a routine police check, officers recovered 3.36 grams of heroin from his possession. Following the recovery, authorities seized both the contraband and the motorcycle used in the operation.
The police spokesman confirmed that a case under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the teenager. After his apprehension, the minor was presented before the competent authority and subsequently sent to the observation home at R S Pura in Jammu.
In a separate incident, police arrested two other narcotic smugglers in the Billawar area of Kathua district. The authorities seized 23 grams of heroin from the two suspects, identified as Pawan Dev Singh from Majalta (Udhampur) and Naresh Singh from Makwal-Ramkot (Kathua). Like the teenager, both of these individuals now face charges under the NDPS Act.
Police officials reiterated their commitment to tackling the growing menace of drug abuse in the region. The rising trend of drug-related incidents among youths has evoked serious concern among local communities and law enforcement agencies alike. Authorities emphasize the need for stringent measures against drug trafficking and awareness campaigns for the youth.
According to recent reports, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a surge in drug-related offenses, prompting law enforcement to adopt a more proactive approach. The joint efforts of police and community members are essential for dismantling drug networks that are increasingly impacting local families and communities.
Expert opinions suggest that comprehensive rehabilitation programs alongside law enforcement are critical in addressing drug addiction. Police urge citizens to report suspicious activities and support initiatives aimed at curbing drug abuse, particularly among the youth.
The swift actions taken by the Samba and Kathua police demonstrate their dedication to creating a safer environment for residents. As law enforcement agencies continue to enhance surveillance and intelligence-led operations, authorities remain hopeful for a decline in drug-related offenses in the region.
