Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, reiterating that regional governance matters strictly fall under domestic jurisdiction. He emphasized that the issues facing Kashmir residents require local solutions, not foreign intervention.
Omar Abdullah stated, “After a long time, a US Ambassador is visiting Jammu & Kashmir. We will speak with him. I would like to hear him.” His remarks set clear expectations for the high-profile diplomatic engagement.
The Chief Minister firmly asserted that external entities have no authority over local matters. “Our problems are not his concern. It is not my habit to complain about our issues to the ambassador of another country. Our problems will not be resolved by Washington but by our own government. I will speak to him about Jammu & Kashmir,” he declared.
This visit marks a significant opportunity for dialogue, but Abdullah is resolute in his position against interventions from outside powers. The residents of Jammu and Kashmir have long faced unique challenges, and Abdullah insists that solutions must emerge from within the union territory.
The Chief Minister also addressed pressing local issues, particularly the persistent problem of waterlogging in parts of Srinagar. He acknowledged that these difficulties arise from historical oversights in civic planning, which have accumulated over years of inadequate infrastructure development.
“Waterlogging in parts of Srinagar is a legacy issue. It’s not the creation of the last two years, not even the last five years. Neither you nor I know who gave permission to build colonies without providing drainage. Now, retrospectively, we are creating drainage in these colonies. We have identified the problematic areas. When we receive warnings from the Met Department, we arrange additional pumpage,” Omar Abdullah explained.
His candid discussions of local governance underscore a need for comprehensive reforms in urban planning. Abdullah’s administration is actively working on solutions, and he mentioned collaboration with the municipal authorities to address these longstanding concerns. The goal is to enhance infrastructure and provide better living conditions for all residents.
As the diplomatic visit unfolds, the focus remains on establishing a constructive relationship without undermining the sovereignty of local governance. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s stance signals his commitment to addressing Jammu and Kashmir’s issues internally, fostering self-reliance amidst international attention.
