Jammu, October 10, 2026: The Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu, took significant strides in the field of pain management by organizing a one-day workshop focused on palliative care, marking World Palliative Care Day. The event, named “Pain Management – An Essential Part of Palliative Care,” attracted around 130 delegates, including esteemed consultants, postgraduate residents, and healthcare professionals from district hospitals and private medical institutions.
This Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme served as a crucial platform for enhancing the understanding of comprehensive pain management strategies to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from cancer and other serious illnesses. The importance of palliative care in addressing the multifaceted suffering of such patients took centre stage during the discussions.
Under the leadership of Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal and Dean of GMC Jammu, the event resonated with the voices of experts in the field. The organizing committee included prominent figures such as Dr. Rajesh Mahajan as the Organising Chairperson, Dr. Madan Katoch as Co-Chairperson, and several other key contributors to ensure a successful execution of the CME.
Throughout the programme, participants engaged in expert lectures and dynamic panel discussions on critical topics such as pain assessment, optimal opioid use, and the integral role of a holistic approach in palliative care. The experts highlighted the necessity of compassionate communication and personalized treatment plans, reinforcing the value of a multidisciplinary approach to alleviate the physical, psychological, and spiritual pain that patients often endure.
Dr. Jasmine Chaudhary and Dr. Heena Saini expertly moderated the sessions, ensuring that the discussions were not only informative but also engaging. A notable feature of the workshop was a poster competition themed “The Last Chapter Can Still Be Beautiful.” This initiative encouraged students and residents to delve into the significance of dignity, comfort, and compassion even during life’s final stages, promoting creativity in presenting their insights on palliative care.
The commitment to elevating palliative care practices emerged prominently, with a renewed focus on integrating these critical services into everyday clinical routines. The event concluded with an appeal for ensuring timely pain relief and dignified care for patients facing the challenges of cancer and other life-limiting conditions.
The creation of a dedicated palliative care file during this workshop further signifies the GMC’s focus on streamlining and enhancing palliative care services in the region. This document lays the foundation for a more structured approach toward improving the quality of life for patients who need it the most.
